Frequently Asked Questions about the SCR1
Q. Why the Toyota GR86 Chassis?
After a lengthy selection process, we decided collectively to use the GR86 chassis for multiple reasons. The aftermarket support for components is outstanding, the vehicle as a whole is lightweight, and it looks great from all angles.
Q. Is this just a Tesla swapped GR86?
Not in the slightest. The SCR1 is equipped with a bespoke powertrain, batteries and control devices which have been specifically engineered for motorsport by Scalar Performance and Hypercraft USA.
Q. Why can’t I just race prep my own electric car?
At an amateur level you can go lap your current EV in an open lapping day but you cannot race your EV wheel to wheel for a number of reasons all related to safety around the HV components. We have mitigated the risks of EV with regards to Battery Management, Electric Shock, Fire Suppression, Emergency Safety Systems and Thermal runaway to be safe for motorsports. Many of these engineering steps that we have incorporated into our car are not present on road going vehicles. For the safety standards on our car we closely followed and in some areas exceeded the FIA Standards (Appendix J Section 18). For more detailed information, see our safety section on our website.
Q. How does trackside charging work?
Currently our cars support Level 2 and Level 3 fast charging with a maximum of 150kW recharge capabilities, which allows for a charge time of less than 20min. Some tracks have charging capabilities on premise, some will require mobile EV charging solutions and some will require the use of a 150kw+ generator.
Q. How long does it take to charge?
At, Level 3/150kW charging, the SCR1 will recharge in under 20 minutes.
Q. How long does a charge last?
With regenerative braking, the car is designed to last greater than 45min at race pace. Total available run time varies by race course, conditions and driver.
Q. How fast does it go?
Top speed is 160mph (267kph), however this is not what we built the car for. Few tracks have straight aways long enough to achieve top speeds. With this in mind, we geared our car for targeting fast lap times and not a top speed or 0 to 60 time.
Q. Where can I race the SCR1?
The National Auto Sport Association (NASA) has approved the SCR1 race car for competition in their Super Touring Series. In addition, we are currently working with other motorsport organizations to accommodate the SCR1 race car. SCR1 owners also have the opportunity to lap their car at local track days.
